30 Blows - A DIY Attempt

Crafty is not a word I would use to describe myself.  Those of you who know me, know this a true statement.  For those of you who don't know me, well you are able to see first hand how not-crafty I am.  Most of the time, I think, if I can buy it, why make it myself?  But, thanks to Pinterest, a whole new world is slowly opening up to me.  A world of simple DIY projects, that I may actually be able to handle.  A world where making something, really is more special than buying it.  Some of the things I have found are not for sale.

This was my first attempt at making something myself, that was inspired by what I saw on Pinterest:

I love how pretty, and nice and neat this looks.  But, I also know my limitations.  I don't have a way of printing something like this.  I mean, I have a basic printer.  And I know I could find a template somewhere.  But, to make it look really nice, I need a laser printer.  (Right?  I'm just guessing.  Please tell me otherwise if you actually know how to make things look like this!)  So, I adapted this design to make it work for me.

Oh and for the record, these photos suck!  So I apologize.  They are certainly not Pinterest worthy, but it was the best I could do at the time to document my project.

If you want to scroll the bottom, you can ruin the surprise and see the final product. (I know that is what I would do).  But I'm going to take you through the steps I went through.  First, shopping.  Here is what my my shopping list looked like:

The twist top jar came from HomeGoods.
The Gum Balls came from Amazon. Man do I love free 2 day shipping with Amazon Prime.

Here is what my shopping list looked like broken down:

Buoy was really curious about what I was doing.  He even dropped his toys to check it out.

After purchasing everything, I put a label on the glass jar.

Then I wrote on the chalkboard label, 30 Blows, and put the gum balls in.  And tada!  The finished product!  It's not as pretty as the inspiration, but I was still pretty proud of myself!

So the one problem I ran into: I only bought one bag of gum balls.  This jar would hold at least two bags and probably a little bit more.  So my finished product looked kind of funny.  But, for a first attempt, I will take it!  I ended up filling the rest of the jar up with bubble gum my husband was able to grab from Walgreens.  It wasn't ideal, but it still looked cute.  Sorry, I forgot to take pictures.

So, this my first DIY attempt.  What do you think?  So easy right?  And I hope the birthday who got this as a gift liked it.

And because it is me, and I love my Buoy dog so much, I'm going to end with a last shot of him.  Because apparently, this was the BEST toy we ever could have given him!  He loved the sound of the gum balls against glass.  So who knows!  My next project might be a home made dog toy.

What is your latest DIY project?
